The History of Our Name ...

The idea for the name came to both Djs Heptune and Mr Lob over 10 years ago as they were digging for some records and thinking about a name for a new night they were putting on at Ace Morning in Brunswick, Melbourne. The idea was for Mr Lob and Heptune to put on a 'breaks' night so that they could play some of the harder and funkier stuff they were buying but not getting to play at their hip hop gigs. While searching for records they came across the soundtrack to the tv series Kung Fu, which if my memory serves me, had a track entilted Grasshopper. At the same time we came across an album by the famously unknown 'Dynamite Brothers' who had a track about weed!! Inevitably, that was where the name came from. So not the obvious as you all may be thinking!!

Weedhopper History

Weedhopper ran its first party, a 'Breaks Nite' on August 24, 2002 at Ace Morning in Brunswick, Melbourne and pretty much continued running that monthly breaks nite for two years. 2005 saw a bit of a break with the concentration more on the website and the occasional party. In late 2005 we returned with our weekly funk nite, 'The Get Down' which continues as we speak!

From our beginnings Heptune was at the forefront of our flier and poster design and went on to design our first 8 party fliers (see Weedhopper events page for images) and also the now famous 'Warehouse Drive Thru' Weedhopper flier.

Out of the parties grew lots of other activities like flier and poster design, promotion, distribution and a wicked crew of some of Melbourne's finest 'underground ' breaks, funk and hip hop dj's.

From May 2003, as Dj Heptune took a break from Weedhopper to concentrate on his own design and dj business,Terence O'Loughlin from Tribal Logic Design then took on the design of our fliers and posters. Terence went on to design the next 12 Weedhopper fliers and also became our distributor, doorman and cashier!

Dj Heptune came back on board for awhile and provided us with our business card design and various fliers. Heptune has now struck out on his own and does some fantastic work.

Behind the scenes and throughout this time Mr Lob has continued to work at keeping Weedhopper alive and as an entity in some form or another, true to the spirit of the original idea to keep it focused on funkee breaks, cool designs and photography.

Mr Lob has now also jumped on the design wagon and is also doing some of our fliers and posters, as well as providing the bulk of our photographs (see lob designs page for images)

Also joining us in the design area is Leen Designs, who created our sticker range and the Get Down party fliers from 2006!

Weedhopper ran its last official party on Saturday 30 June 2007 at Workshop in Melbourne. It was a huge night that encapsulated all that Weedhopper was about and that was creating a great vibe for party goers!

Jump to 2010

Weedhopper Productions still continues as an entity to this day, with the main banner still carried by Mr Lob, who continues to Dj Weekly, photograph and design party fliers. While most events now are billed as Mr Lob Presents or Black Caesar Events, behind it all is Weedhopper's original idea and that is to always bring a party to the people and to keep it funky...
